More Than a Game: Montague Junior High Eagles Finish Season with Heart, Courage, and Brotherhood
The Montague Junior High Eagles wrapped up their football season last Thursday in a hard-fought battle against Saint Jo, falling 18–2 in the district championship game. The Eagles finished the season with a 3–4 overall record and an impressive 3–1 district record. However, this season will be remembered for far more than wins and losses.
The Eagles faced challenges this year that extended well beyond the football field. Following the heartbreaking loss of their teammate, friend, and brother, Cutter Garrett, and the serious injuries sustained by teammate Colt Garrett in the same tragic accident, these young men were faced with circumstances no team should ever have to endure.
Through their grief and adversity, the Eagles made the courageous decision to finish what they had started. They chose to take the field each week in honor of Cutter and Colt, playing not just for themselves, but for their teammates, their families, and a brotherhood that extends far beyond the game of football.
Leading the way were eighth graders Hayden Hennessey, Wade Hughes, Jerry Bonilla, and Corban McDowell. These young men stepped up when their team needed them most, demonstrating remarkable leadership, strength, and compassion. They helped hold their teammates together, encouraged one another through difficult moments, and set an example of what it truly means to be an Eagle.
Although the Eagles came up short of a district championship, they accomplished something far greater. They showed their school and community what it means to stand together, persevere through adversity, and play with purpose.
This season was never just about football. It was about friendship, family, courage, and brotherhood.
The scoreboard may not have reflected the outcome they hoped for, but these young men finished their season as champions in the ways that matter most.
Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle. Forever Brothers. Forever Playing for Cutter and Colt.
